The Best Cardstock for Card Making

The Best Cardstock for Card Making - Whisper White and Very Vanilla Stampin' Up! Cardstock

All cardstock is not the same, and if you are looking for the best cardstock for card making, I’m here to help you out!

I’m sure you’ve seen those big packs of colored construction paper in craft stores. While they are great for some things, they aren’t suitable for card making. Have you tried folding construction paper? You don’t get a good fold, and the surface is pretty rough.

The best cardstock for card making needs to be smooth and have a good weight to it.

Cardstock Paper Weight

The weight of cardstock refers to how thick the cardstock is. You don’t want to use flimsy or light-weight cardstock for cardmaking. You need something more durable that can hold up to the things you will put on the card like layers or embellishments.

80-pound cardstock is an excellent weight for card bases, paper layers, and embellishments. You can also use 80lb for boxes and other 3D items. These White or Vanilla cardstock packs are great for everyday use.

For a more durable cardstock, choose one that is 100-pound. This weight will be thicker and sturdier. It is terrific for layers and creating boxes. These White and Vanilla 100lb cardstock from Stampin’ Up! are my favorites for card bases.

Smooth Cardstock

Besides cardstock weight, it is essential to look for a smooth finish on your cardstock. The White and Vanilla cardstock are specially treated and extra pressed for a smooth stamping surface.

Cardstock Sizes

Most of the time, cardstock comes in sheets of 8-1/2″ x 11″ and 12″ x 12″. You can get two standard card basis from one sheet of 8-1/2″ x 11″ cardstock. The 12″ x 12″ sheets are good for smaller cards like 3″ x 3″ or for layers for your card.
